Elk/Wapiti
The Elk or Wapiti (native american name) is one of the largest species of deer.

Only Sambar can match it and Moose beat it. Eighteen Wapiti were released in New Zealand at the head of George Sound in 1905. Wapiti are their own unique species but can interbreed with red deer. This interbreeding is somewhat of a problem in the Fiordland herd, effecting the quality of wapiti heads in the area.
Wapiti habitat ranges from forest to forest edge, they feed on grasses and other plants and also some bark. Wapiti cows approximatly 225 kg (500 lb) and stand around 1.3 m (4½ ft) at the shoulder. They are 2 m (6½ ft) from nose to tail. Bulls tend to be around 25% larger than cows at maturity and weigh around 320 kg (700 lb) they stand around 1.5 m (5 ft) at the shoulder and average around 2.5 m (8 ft) in length. The rut ranges from as early as mid march and usually runs through to the around the end of april. The roar of the wapiti is termed a bugle, it differs from the deep roar of a red stag sound more like a long scream.
