Group of Chamois
The Chamois is a goat/antelope type animal that inhabits moderatly high altitudes and is accustomed to living in steep, rocky, rugged alpine terrain. They are a member of the Bovidae family and such are related to goats and sheep. When fully grown a chamois will reach an approximate height of about 75 cm (2½ feet) and weigh in at about 50 kg (110 pounds). Both genders have short horns which curl back at the tips. Their pelt has a rich brown colour in summer which turns to a light grey in winter.
Chamois can reach up to 20 years in age, the females and young are herd animals while the males are generally solitary except for the rut which occurs at the end of autumn. Chamois first arrived in New Zealand in 19o7, they were gifted by the Austrian Emperor. They were first released in the Mt Cook region but have spread across much of the southern alps of New Zealand.
