– Whether stalking or still hunting always ensure that you are hunting into the wind or with still hunting waiting down wind. Deer have a great sence of smell and if they get your scent they will be long gone before you even get close.
– Early morning and the evening tend to be the best times for hunting. You want to be out hunting at first light and out at last light. This especially applies to tops and clearings hunting. This doesn’t mean you won’t shoot anything during the day, just your highest chances are early morning and late evening. Bush stalking can also be productive throughout the day, but again best early morning and late evening.
– Stealth helps. Try to be quiet in the bush, soft lighter boots are better for stalking. Try to avoid raincoat fabric and hard canvas type fabrics that can be loud when scraping through the bush.
– When hunting tops, clearings, river flats etc invest in a good pair of binoculars. Spend alot of your time glassing from areas that give you a good vantage point. Once again change of light is the best time for these areas. Also look for pieces of an animal as well as the whole thing. Sometimes only a part is visable. This also applies for bush hunting, sometime you may only see an ear etc. Also try to look through the forest rather that at it.
– Be persistant with your hunting. Don’t give up. The more time you are out there hunting the higher you chances of getting an animal will be. The hunter who is out for 8 hours will shoot more than the hunter who is out for 45 minutes.
– Learn: read books, watch dvd’s and ask questions to experienced hunters.
– When stalking, move more quickly through areas with little sign and slow right down and spend alot of time looking in areas with more sign. Try to stay off ridge tops where you will be silhouetted and easily visable.
– Plan your hunt. Try to think where the deer would be and concentrate your efforts on those areas. For example warm sunny faces in cold weather, areas with a lot of feed etc.
– ALWAYS remember to take a good map and compass. Take note of the area and where your heading. Try not to get lost!
– Staying away from huts, fly camping out and hunting in areas with low hunting pressure will increase your chances greatly.
– Hunt the seasons. Animals will be in different places at different times of the year. For example spring and summer are good times to find deer in the open while the depths of winter the deer are more likely to be in the bush.
