Makino Hut

Makino hut is a cosy little hut with heaps of character located in the north eastern corner of the Kaweka Forest park. It is located in a small clearing on a main ridge directly above the Mohaka river. The hut is accessed from Makahu road. From Napier follow Puketitiri road. When you are almost at the Kawekas you will see a turnoff to your right (Pakaututu road). Follow this road untill you see the Makahu road on your left, follow this road untill you see a DOC sign marking the carpark for the Makino hut track.

From the carpark the walk takes you up a ridge. The first part is through manuka but heads into beech forest a bit after. You will continue to follow the main ridge untill you arrive at the hut. The majority of this ridge has manuka/kanuka forest on the north facing side and beech forest on the south. There is plenty of good hunting around this area. The main deer species is Sika and it is mostly bush hunting, their is little in the way of clearings. This area is generally not too busy. There is obviously no fishing here, however you can drop down to the Mohaka and Makino rivers in one to one and a half hours that provide good fishing.

The hut has 6 bunks with matresses, a water tank, long drop and a corker cooker (woodburner) for heat/cooking. there is plenty of wood around the hut for fuel. Overall this is a nice little spot with plenty of hunting and the hut is cosy.
